Building trust through design when your mission is eliminating the wealth gap

Stackwell Capital isn’t building just another investing app. They are on a mission to eliminate the racial wealth gap by making wealth-building accessible, educational, and achievable for underserved communities.
The stakes were high. Every screen needed to build trust with people who'd been failed by financial institutions before. Every interaction needed to make investing feel achievable, not intimidating. Every visual choice carried the weight of Stackwell's mission.
Their previous design relationship wasn't quite working. But Stackwell couldn't justify hiring a full-time senior designer yet. They needed world-class design thinking without the overhead – someone who could move at startup speed, understand fintech complexity, and amplify the product, not just maintain it.
"Working with Lumi has meant that we have access to more resources... and a great flexible relationship because we're not at the place where we need a full-time designer on board."

A design partner that thinks like your team, works at your pace, and delivers beyond the brief

At Lumi, we believe in becoming an extension of your product team.

With Stackwell, this meant embedding directly into their development rhythm: working in their tools, syncing weekly on priorities, staying connected, and flexing capacity to match the reality of startup life.

Our approach

From day one, we integrated into Stackwell's product team as if it were our own. Weekly syncs kept priorities aligned. Monthly capacity flexed with actual needs – critical when product priorities shift between rapid development and slower planning.
When priorities shifted mid-sprint, the work shifted with them. When team members transitioned, we maintained continuity.
There's been a lot of changes in a year. People have come and gone. Their role has shifted... but we've just managed to keep having open communication when there's problems.

Building the foundation for scale

→ Created and maintained a comprehensive design system that accelerates development and provides consistency
→ Enabled Stackwell's dev team to ship features faster with confidence the experience stays cohesive
→ Rolled out accessibility compliance across the product, critical for a platform serving diverse communities
→ Built a scalable foundation that grows with the product without constant designer intervention

Redesigning the mobile experience strategically

→ Leading a systematic redesign of the entire mobile app, modernising the experience without the chaos of a full product pause
→ Working closely with Stackwell's technical team on implementation and creative team on direction
→ Reimagining information architecture, interaction patterns, and visual language one sprint at a time
→ Moving the app from MVP aesthetic to the polished, intuitive experience users expect from financial products they trust

Grounding UX decisions in data, not assumptions

This iterative approach meant the team could move seamlessly from concept to execution, equipping them with a product that grows with real user needs as they evolve.

Defining and growing the brand

As we worked on shaping MapMortar’s MVP, the need for a strong, cohesive brand identity goals emerged – something that appealed equally to their diverse audience while reflecting their bold mission to decarbonise the built environment.
Brand identity: We worked on a modern, approachable visual brand that communicated trust, ambition, and impact
Website design: We designed and built a polished, user-focused website to capture the attention of investors and potential clients
Pitch decks and collateral: From investor presentations to conference banners, we created materials that clearly communicated MapMortar’s value, helping them secure funding and build their reputation in the industry
We get a lot of compliments on how the software looks – it usually isn’t pretty in the built environment!

We were absolutely delighted with the outcomes. Lumi delivered everything we had hoped for and more, as they also taught us about the product development methodology they had employed and pushed us to prioritise features and our ideas. Our customers loved the wireframes and off the back of them, we are much closer to moving some customers towards paying for our MVP.
