Ahhh, forms.
You pour months into the product and the positioning, and then a clunky signup form undoes it all in thirty seconds.
But a form doesn’t have to drain your users. They can come out of it invested; some onboarding surveys are even ✨ fun ✨
It all comes down to handing something back at every step: a tip, a nudge, a glimpse of the payoff.
Here's how we fix forms in five easy wins ⬇️
Before you ask for anything, show people what they're here to get. They signed up for a reason, so open by putting that value front and centre: the goal you'll help them reach, the payoff waiting on the other side.
Better still, start delivering it – a first useful tip, a glimpse of their plan, a quick win. Value up front turns every question that follows into a fair trade.
Then open simply with a quick tap, not a text field. A small, effortless "yes" makes the next answer easier, and the one after that. Front-load friction and people bail; front-load the easy wins and they build momentum.
Every question should visibly get the user something.
Don't just ask their goal, say why you're asking: "So we can build your plan around it."
And ask about those goals early. It signals the app is about them, not you, and their answers become the fuel for personalising the experience in the onboarding and the app.
Forms can be a real conversation.
➡️ Use what someone told you on screen two to tailor screen three. Sharpen the next question, skip the irrelevant ones, reflect their goal back at them.
Onboarding that adapts feels like it's listening. It also sets the real test for every field: does this make the experience smarter for them?
If it doesn't, cut it. People don't resent effort, they resent effort that goes nowhere.
Once the questions earn their place, don't make people labour over the answers.
Pull in whatever you can automatically: detect their location, autofill the address, prefill anything you already know.
And don't let clumsy mechanics burn the goodwill:
Fill out your own form. On your phone, one-handed, on a train. Whatever makes you wince is costing you signups.
Every Wednesday, Lumi co-founder Milosz runs a free Founder Hour. Bring a form, an onboarding flow, or whatever is causing frustration, and we'll pull it apart together.
